How I Got Lost.

Thaipusam.

Posted in Family by Satish Vijay on February 5, 2009

This Saturday is going to be so freaking tiring. I have to go for Thaipusam. My family and I stopped going for three years because each year, someone died. And if someone dies, you are not actually supposed to do anything for Thaipusam for that year.

What is Thaipusam?  According to Wikipedia, it’s a “Hindu festival celebrated mostly by the Tamil community on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai (Jan/Feb). The festival commemorates both the birthday of Lord Murugan (also Subramaniam), the youngest son of Shiva and Parvati, and the occasion where Parvati gave Murugan a vel (lance) so he could vanquish the evil demon Soorapadman.”

So for this Saturday, I have to carry a pot of milk on my head. Yes, it sounds pretty silly, but well, it’s not. It’s real painful. Your head will hurt for the next few days. Haha. Oh, and you know how you see parts of the festival on the news? The part where people get loads of piercings all over their body? I’m going to get a piercing too. Not all over my body though. Just on my forehead. I’ll try asking my cousin to take a picture of me when I get my piercing.

I’m not really keen on the whole Thaipusam festival though. But whenever I do it, I get to do it with my cousins and all. So that makes it more fun. If you go by yourself, then damn, that’s just sad.

Anyways, on Friday night, my whole family’s coming to my house for some prayers for Thaipusam. Then on Saturday, they’ll come back to my house, and at midnight, we’ll be off to the temple somewhere in Serangoon. I’m nervous for the piercing. I hope it’s not painful.

The sucky part of Thaipusum is when the people get into weird trances. It’s so fucking scary.

Oh, and here’s a picture of my cousin Luxshmi’s baby. Vedanth. He’s fucking adorable!
